About Gary

Gary is a wilderness expedition leader and tenured professor of Natural & Applied Sciences from Santa Cruz, California. His scientific research explores the powerful effects of nature on human health, both physical and mental. He has led expeditions around the globe for over twenty years ranging from deep jungle treks to volcano climbs, and from traversing the Pyrenees to first-descent white water kayak runs. He has made curriculum contributions to the field of wilderness education and has taught courses for wilderness outfitters, retreat venues, institutions of higher education, and corporations.

Gary’s teaching highlights the practices of a variety of wisdom traditions and cultures with an emphasis on how they connect to the natural world. He is a keen naturalist, adventurer, kite-surfer, eco-healing guide and mountaineer. One of Gary’s biggest passions in life is teaching people how they can nourish and heal their mind, body and spirit through time spent in the wilds.
